“The UB develops a technique that verifies the geographical origin of extra virgin olive oil”:
Researchers at the University of Barcelona (UB) have developed a tool to verify the geographical origin of virgin olive oil. This tool allows to classify the oils among those produced in the European Union. In addition, it can verify which oils belong to protected geographical denominations of a region or an adjacent one.
The technique used is gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.

“Planas says olive oil properties should be recognised in EU nutrition labelling”:
Luis Planas, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, says that the health properties of olive oils need to be recognised in the European Union’s future front-end nutrition labelling. Planas thinks it is important to transmit all the information to the consumer, in a clear way.
As well as promoting a healthier diet, having a single EU label will help to guarantee consumer protection. Planas believes that Spain is making “great efforts” to become the leading country in the technical-scientific development of olive oil.
The minister believes that continuing to innovate will also benefit other EU producers, such as Italy, Greece and Portugal, as well as reaching other markets.
Planas pays great attention to showing the importance of olive oil, with almost 3 million hectares of surface area, representing 15% of the cultivated land. In addition, Spain represents 70% of European production and 46% of world production.
